Fat dissolving injections and liposuction both reduce stubborn fat. They work in very different ways. Fat dissolving injections use a drug to break down fat cells in a small area. Liposuction uses a thin suction tube to remove fat during a surgical procedure. Dynasty Clinic compares them here so you can see which one fits your body and your goals.
Your choice depends on the area and the amount of fat and the quality of your skin. Recovery and risk differ a lot between the two. Results vary between patients and neither option replaces weight loss.
Fat Dissolving Injections vs Liposuction at a Glance
The table shows the main differences. The sections after it explain each point in detail.
Factor | Fat dissolving injections | Liposuction |
|---|---|---|
Procedure | Injections of a fat-breaking drug into small areas | Surgery with small incisions and a suction cannula |
Best for | Small stubborn pockets such as under the chin or bra fat | Larger areas such as the abdomen and flanks and thighs |
Fat amount | Small amounts removed gradually | Up to about 5 liters per outpatient session |
Sessions | Often 2 to 4 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart | Usually one procedure |
When you see results | Visible change often from 6 to 8 weeks | Contour change appears as swelling settles |
Downtime | Minimal | Compression garment for about 4 to 6 weeks |
Main risks | Swelling and bruising and nodules and skin damage | Infection and bleeding and uneven contours and anesthesia risks |
Skin tightening | None | Limited so loose skin may remain |
What Are Fat Dissolving Injections?
Fat dissolving injections are a non-surgical treatment for small pockets of fat. Doctors also call the method injection lipolysis. Patients may hear them called fat melting injections or lipo shots. All of these names describe the same idea. A drug goes into the fat layer and breaks down fat cells.
How Fat Dissolving Injections Work
Most products use deoxycholic acid. This is a bile acid that the body makes to digest fat. Injected into fat tissue it damages the walls of fat cells. The body then clears the released fat through the lymphatic system over the following weeks.
The process causes swelling at first. Fat reduction appears slowly as the swelling fades. Dr. Sima Sarabi plans the number of sessions after assessing the area and your response. Dynasty Clinic describes the treatment on its fat melting injections page.
Areas Fat Dissolving Injections Can Treat
- Fat under the chin
- Bra fat and upper back bulges
- Small pockets on the arms and knees
- Love handles and lower abdomen pockets
- Inner thigh pockets
The treatment suits small and localized fat. It does not reduce overall body weight.
What the FDA Says About Fat Dissolving Injections
The US FDA has approved only deoxycholic acid injections for fat under the chin. The agency updated the Kybella label on 15 September 2026. It warned of serious reactions when the drug is used outside the chin area and of nodules that may not resolve.
The FDA also warned in 2023 against unapproved fat dissolving products sold under names such as Aqualyx and Lipodissolve. It reported scarring and infections and skin deformities. Treatment outside the approved area is therefore a medical decision with real risk. During your consultation Dr. Sima Sarabi explains which product is used and what its approval status is.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from under the skin. A surgeon places a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions. The tube suctions out fat from the treated area. Fat cells removed this way do not return.
How Liposuction Works
The surgeon first injects a fluid into the area to loosen the fat and limit bleeding. The cannula then breaks up and removes the fat. Some techniques add laser energy or vibration to help release the fat. Compression garments go on after the procedure to control swelling.
Areas Liposuction Can Treat
Liposuction treats the abdomen and flanks and back and waistline. It also treats the thighs and arms and chin. Dynasty Clinic offers 360 liposuction for the midsection. You can read the full procedure details on the liposuction page.
How Much Fat Liposuction Can Remove
Surgeons generally limit an outpatient session to about 5 liters of total aspirate. That figure equals roughly 10 pounds of fat and fluid. Larger volumes carry more risk and may need hospital care.
Which Option Gives Better Results?
Liposuction removes more fat and changes the shape of a larger area. Fat dissolving injections refine small areas. The right result depends on how much fat you have and where it sits.
Results From Fat Dissolving Injections
Change builds slowly. Many patients see improvement from around 6 to 8 weeks after the first session. Sessions are usually spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Read how long fat dissolving injections take to work for the full timeline.
Results From Liposuction
The contour changes straight after surgery but swelling hides the result at first. Swelling begins to fade within the first week. Full recovery takes about 3 months. Loose skin may remain because the skin does not always tighten after fat removal.
Do the Results Last?
Both methods remove fat cells from the treated area. The fat cells that remain can still grow if you gain weight. Neither option stops future weight gain. A steady lifestyle protects the result.
Recovery and Downtime Compared
Recovery After Fat Dissolving Injections
Most patients return to daily activity quickly. Swelling and bruising and tenderness are common. Temporary numbness can also occur in the treated area. Swelling often peaks in the first days and then settles.
Recovery After Liposuction
Recovery takes longer. You wear a compression garment for about 4 to 6 weeks. Soreness and swelling and bruising are normal. Plan time away from work and from exercise. Your surgeon sets the exact limits.
Risks and Side Effects Compared
Common effects are swelling and bruising and numbness. Nodules or firm lumps can form at the injection site.
Risks of Liposuction
Liposuction carries surgical risks. These include infection and bleeding and uneven contours. Fluid can collect under the skin. Anesthesia adds its own risks.
Which Treatment Suits You?
A consultation decides this. The points below show how the choice usually works.
Fat Dissolving Injections May Suit You If You Have
- A small and stubborn pocket of fat
- A weight close to your goal
- Good skin elasticity
- Little time for recovery
Liposuction May Suit You If You Have
- Fat across a larger area such as the abdomen or flanks
- A stable weight and realistic expectations
- Time to recover and wear a compression garment
- Good overall health for surgery
When Neither Option Is the Answer
Neither treatment tightens loose skin or treats obesity. Pregnancy and active skin infections also rule out treatment for now. Bleeding disorders need a medical review first. Anyone aiming for weight loss needs a different plan. Chin fat has its own options. Dr. Sima Sarabi reviews them on the chin reduction page.

Can You Combine Both Treatments?
Some patients have liposuction for a larger area and injections later for a small leftover pocket. The doctor decides this after the surgical area has healed. Other options such as fat freezing and Endolift skin tightening also exist. Dr. Sima Sarabi explains each one during your consultation.
What Affects the Cost?
Price depends on the treatment area and the number of sessions. For liposuction it also depends on the anesthesia and the facility. Dynasty Clinic confirms the price after your consultation. Ask what the quote includes before you compare clinics.

FAQ
Are fat dissolving injections as effective as liposuction?
No. Liposuction removes far more fat. Fat dissolving injections suit small pockets only.
Are fat dissolving injections permanent?
The treated fat cells do not come back. Remaining fat cells can still grow. Weight gain can bring the bulge back.
Which has less downtime?
Fat dissolving injections have less downtime. Liposuction needs a compression garment for about 4 to 6 weeks.
Can fat dissolving injections treat belly fat?
They can treat small pockets of belly fat. They do not suit large abdominal areas. The FDA has approved deoxycholic acid only for fat under the chin.
Is liposuction safer than fat dissolving injections?
Neither is risk free. Liposuction carries surgical and anesthesia risks. Injections carry risks such as nodules and skin damage. Safety depends on the product and the technique and the doctor.
